Diseases
Avena strigosa Schreb.
A disease of Avena strigosa caused by the obligate biotrophic fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. avenae. The crop is used as a valuable genetic source of Pm resistance genes for cereal breeding.
In the reference 11 varieties crop Black oat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causal agent of powdery mildew on Avena strigosa is the specialized form of the fungus Blumeria graminis f. sp. avenae. The infection manifests as white or gray cobweb-like mycelium on the leaves, which densifies as the disease progresses and becomes covered with fruit bodies—cleistothecia. Yellowish necrotic spots often form on the underside of leaf blades at the sites of haustoria formation, and under favorable conditions, the fungus spreads to leaf sheaths and panicles.
Avena strigosa serves as an important source of genetic material for improving the resistance of cultivated oat varieties. Resistance genes to this pathogen are denoted by the Pm index, and specific Avena strigosa lines demonstrate the presence of highly effective alleles comparable to the known Pm1–Pm12 series. Studies of Avena strigosa accessions are aimed at evaluating their spectrum of activity against current fungal populations and identifying stable sources of immunity.
