Avena strigosa Schreb.
A disease of sand oat caused by Puccinia coronata and Puccinia graminis. The crop serves as a key genetic resource for resistance due to the presence of specific Pg and Pc genes.

Sand oat is affected by crown rust (pathogen Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae) and stem rust (pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. avenae). Crown rust primarily infects leaves, whereas stem rust spreads to stems, leaves, and panicles, causing lodging and reduced productivity. To assess the reaction to infection, an Infection Type (IT) scale is used, where types 0 and 1 indicate resistance, while 3+ and 4 indicate susceptibility.
The species possesses high genetic variability, which is confirmed by the presence of numerous pathogen races, including DBD, KBD, TJS, and TQL for stem rust. Of fundamental importance is the resistance gene Pg6, localized on chromosome AA2 and mapped using SNP markers. Regarding crown rust, quantitative trait loci such as QPc.FD-AS-AA4 and specific resistance genes, for example Pc94, have been identified and are actively used in breeding for introgression into hexaploid oat species.
