Narrow-leaf lupin is capable of providing 70% of its nitrogen requirements through symbiosis with Bradyrhizobium lupini bacteria, accumulating nitrogen in volumes exceeding those of clover, peas, or faba beans. The crop's powerful, deep-penetrating root system allows it to extract nutrients from deep soil horizons, while the high fiber content in the green mass promotes long-term soil structuring and uniform nitrogen release.
Unlike forage varieties, green manure types of lupin are characterized by a high alkaloid content, which, when the biomass is incorporated into the soil, provides a pronounced disinfecting effect. This property, along with a phytosanitary effect that suppresses nematodes and a range of cereal and potato diseases, makes lupin a valuable component of crop rotation. The crop is adapted to acidic soils, where other green manure crops perform significantly worse.
