Green manure — Crimson clover

Trifolium incarnatum L.

Crimson clover is a fast-growing annual green manure crop used in short crop rotations to suppress weeds and improve soil structure through a root system that penetrates to a depth of up to 90 cm.

In the reference 11 varieties crop Crimson clover, where this is mentioned in the description.

Crimson clover is a single-cut plant that does not regrow after mowing. Its life cycle and rapid autumn growth when sown before winter make it a convenient tool for protecting soil against erosion and quickly accumulating organic matter within a crop rotation system.

This species does not tolerate heavy, acidic, or waterlogged soils, preferring neutral or slightly acidic light soils with carbonate content. The plant has low winter hardiness and can therefore freeze out during severe winters, which facilitates the subsequent incorporation of biomass into the soil.

To achieve the maximum effect, the crop should be incorporated into the soil at the early flowering stage before the green mass becomes coarse. It is recommended to maintain a five-year interval between sowings of this clover on the same field to prevent the accumulation of specific pathogens.
