Variety traits
Trifolium incarnatum L.
The productivity of crimson clover is measured by green mass or dry matter yield. Yield is a single-cut indicator per season, as the crop is primarily single-cut and shows almost no regrowth after mowing.
In the reference 11 varieties crop Crimson clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
Typical green mass yields range from 200–300 c/ha, while dry matter output in pure stands is 2.1–5.0 t/ha. Yield is significantly influenced by sowing dates: spring sowing often results in lower mass compared to summer sowing in August.
A critical factor is the harvesting stage, which must be strictly performed at the beginning of flowering to prevent stem coarsening. When used as a forage crop or green manure, crimson clover shows a high response to moisture availability and the presence of carbonates in the soil.
