Helianthus annuus L.
A fungal disease caused by the autoecious obligate parasite Puccinia helianthi. The disease affects the vegetative organs of the plant throughout the entire growing season, leading to a reduction in oil content by up to 15% and yield losses of up to 45%.

The pathogen completes its full life cycle exclusively on sunflower. Symptoms appear as light green spots with pycnidia on the upper side of the leaf, orange aecia on the lower side, followed by the development of rusty-brown urediniopustules. By the end of the growing season, dark teliospores form within the pustules, ensuring the pathogen's overwintering.
Puccinia helianthi populations are characterized by high variability. A set of differential lines, such as SM 90, SM 29, P-386, and HA-R1–R5, is used to identify physiological races. In Russia, the presence of both old and aggressive new races is noted, including 700, 710, 722, and 772.
Crop resistance is determined by dominant genes, among which R1 and Radv are known. In total, about 19 resistance genes have been described; however, many of them are losing their effectiveness due to the constant evolution of the pathogen. Breeding is aimed at the introgression of new genes, for which molecular markers are used to monitor them.
