Zea mays L. subsp. mays (Sweet Corn Group)
A fungal disease of sweet corn caused by the basidiomycete Puccinia sorghi. The disease manifests as orange-brown pustules on leaves, disrupts photosynthesis, and leads to the formation of shriveled kernels.
In the reference 157 varieties crop Sweet corn, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary pathogen is the obligate biotroph Puccinia sorghi. Its life cycle involves an alternation of hosts: the spermogonial and aecial stages occur on Oxalis, while the uredinial and telial stages develop on corn. In crops, the infection spreads mainly via urediniospores.
Symptoms of the infection appear as the formation of round or oblong pustules 1–3 mm in size on leaves, and less frequently on stems and ear husks. Their color changes from orange-brown to golden-brown, and dark teliosori may appear at the end of the growing season, leading to premature plant desiccation.
Genetic resistance of sweet corn to the pathogen is controlled by specific Rp (Rust resistance) genes, including alleles of the Rp1 locus, such as Rp1-D, Rp1-G, Rp1-J, and Rp1-F. This resistance is race-specific and can be overcome by certain virulent isolates of the fungus.
