Self-fertility in peach

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

Most peach cultivars are fully self-compatible, allowing them to set fruit without cross-pollination. This ensures stable yields and enables the establishment of large-scale, single-cultivar commercial orchards.

The degree of self-fertility in peaches is determined during cultivar trials by isolating inflorescences before flowering, followed by counting the percentage of fruit set. For most commercial cultivars, this indicator guarantees full economic yields without the need to plant pollinizer varieties.

In rare cases, self-infertile cultivars exist, such as Pinto, Hatcher Cling, and Hal-ford, which are characterized by a deficiency or lack of viable pollen. Nevertheless, for the majority of cultivars, independence from external pollination factors significantly reduces risks under unfavorable weather conditions.
