Oats as a green manure crop are distinguished by a high content of potassium, phosphorus, and organic protein in their biomass, which, upon decomposition, is comparable to high-quality manure. Their well-developed fibrous root system effectively structures heavy clay and light sandy soils, preventing erosion. The crop possesses high cold resistance, allowing for sowing at soil temperatures starting from 3–4°C.

The phytosanitary effect of oats manifests in the suppression of soil-borne fungi and nematodes, as well as a reduction in the incidence of potato scab. However, the use of oats requires caution due to their ability to attract wireworms; therefore, they are not recommended for sowing immediately before potatoes. For effective green manuring, the crop should be mowed before seed formation, taking into account its high moisture requirements during the germination period.
