Vigor of soybean

Soybean vigor is an indicator of physiological seed quality, reflecting their ability to develop rapidly and overcome soil resistance under adverse conditions.

To assess soybean vigor, a morphophysiological method is used, which involves germinating seeds in a sand or sand-vermiculite substrate that mimics soil resistance. Germination is carried out in an incubator: the first three days at 20°C, then 7 days at 16–18°C. On the 10th day, the number of normal seedlings that have emerged to the surface, as well as their total mass and length, are evaluated, which allows for an assessment of the seed lot potential.

The regulatory benchmark for elite soybean seeds is a vigor level of 75%. Values above 80% indicate a high development capacity, including when planting depth is increased by up to 30%. High vigor ensures uniform emergence, increases stress resistance and competitiveness against weeds, which ultimately increases yield by 10–15%.
