The vigor of a variety is manifested in the overall development power of aerial organs, including tillering intensity, shoot length, and the rate of leaf area formation. Vigorous varieties have an advantage in competition with weeds, while less vigorous forms are preferable for intensive technologies that allow for the use of high-density planting schemes and facilitate mechanized harvesting. At the same time, the general state of the plants and the incidence of phytopathogens can significantly suppress the natural growth potential of any variety.
