For Gerbera jamesonii, the primary traits for variety testing are the diameter and height of the inflorescence, the diameter of the central disc, and the number and length of the ray florets. Commercial cut-flower varieties are characterized by a diameter of 10 to 18 cm, while pot forms have a capitulum diameter of 4–5 cm.
The size and density of the inflorescence depend on light intensity; with a photoperiod of less than 12 hours, these indicators decrease. Technological maturity of the inflorescence occurs when pollen matures in 2–3 rows of disc florets. Excessive humidity in protected ground triggers the development of fungal infections in the flower heads, which reduces the commercial quality of the product.
