Suitability for cutting — China aster

Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees

This trait is determined by the length and strength of the flower stalk, as well as the duration of decorative value in a vase. In high-quality cut flower varieties, stem height ranges from 60 to 100 cm, and inflorescences remain fresh for up to 14 days.

For cut flower varieties of China aster, habit parameters are critical: upright, sturdy flower stalks 60–90 cm in length, capable of supporting large inflorescences up to 20 cm in diameter. The functional division into cut flower and dwarf groups is clearly expressed through the combination of these morphological characteristics.

The technological specificity of the crop requires cutting only fully opened inflorescences, as aster buds do not have the ability to continue developing after cutting. Properly selected cut flower varieties, when maintained under appropriate conditions, retain their commercial quality in water for 10–14 days.
