Suitability of lilies for cut flower production

Lilium L.

An evaluation parameter for lilies that determines their commercial value based on inflorescence architecture, ethylene sensitivity, and the bulb's ability to recover after harvesting.

In the reference 769 varieties crop Lily, where this is mentioned in the description.

The optimal stage for cutting lilies is when the first bud shows color. Early cutting at the tight green bud stage impairs further opening, while having several already opened flowers complicates transport. An important agrotechnical requirement is to retain at least one-third of the stem with leaves, which is necessary for nutrient accumulation in the bulb and to ensure flowering in subsequent seasons.

When evaluating cultivars for cut flower suitability, factors considered include stem strength, the ability of buds to open uniformly, and resistance to fungal diseases, particularly Botrytis. Different hybrid groups have their own characteristics: Asiatic hybrids are known for their hardiness, Oriental hybrids for their large flowers and fragrance, and LA hybrids combine these qualities with superior forcing characteristics.

Lilies are extremely sensitive to ethylene, exposure to which causes bud drop and leaf yellowing, necessitating their isolation from fruit and vegetable products. For commercial purposes, after cutting, it is standard practice to remove the anthers to prevent petal staining by pollen and to extend the decorative period, which can reach up to three weeks with proper care.
