Sunflower Sowing Date

Optimal sunflower sowing is carried out when the soil at a depth of 5–8 cm warms up to +8…+12 °C, which ensures uniform emergence and efficient use of soil moisture.

In sunflowers, the growing point is elevated to the soil surface immediately upon germination, which determines its sensitivity to frost after the appearance of true leaves. Sowing in cold soil (below +8 °C) delays emergence for up to 3–4 weeks, leading to thinning of the crop and exposing seeds to pathogens and pests. With late sowing, when the soil temperature exceeds +15 °C, moisture loss from the seedbed occurs, leading to uneven emergence and causing critical growth stages to coincide with summer droughts.

The choice of sowing date is closely related to weed control: the optimal period should allow for pre-sowing cultivation to destroy early spring weeds, giving the crop an advantage during its slow growth stage. To prevent issues with synchronized development and pollination, it is recommended not to stretch the sowing of a single hybrid over a period exceeding 7–10 days, while taking into account regional climatic conditions and the risks of late spring frosts.
