Triticum durum Desf.

The selection of sowing dates for durum wheat is determined by its increased heat requirements during the germination and vernalization stages, as well as its critical dependence on moisture availability during the stem elongation and heading phases.

For spring durum wheat, later sowing dates are recommended compared to common wheat, due to the need for higher temperatures for successful vernalization and seed germination. The slower moisture absorption by seeds requires precise timing to coincide with the soil warming period.

Winter durum wheat is sown in the first half of the optimal period for winter common wheat. When planning, the ecotype of the variety and the moisture supply of the site are taken into account, adjusting the sowing so that the critical plant development phases coincide with the wettest periods of the summer season.
