Zea mays L. subsp. mays (Maize Group)
The mass of a maize plant minus water, containing essential nutrients such as starch, proteins, and structural carbohydrates. It is a key indicator for determining harvest timing for silage and assessing feed value.

The dry matter content in maize determines the technological parameters of silage harvesting. A range of 32–35% is considered optimal for harvesting, ensuring a balance between nutrient yield, high-quality packing of the mass, and fermentation intensity.
At dry matter levels below 30%, corresponding to the milk stage, excess moisture leads to nutrient losses in the silage mass and the risk of butyric acid fermentation. Values above 35–38% make it difficult to remove air from the bunker and reduce grain digestibility, which requires additional processing.
Dry matter accumulation is influenced by genotype, planting density, and weather conditions that determine the rate of maturation. High feed value of maize is achieved when the grain concentration is at a level of 40–50% of the total dry matter of the whole plant.
