The primary pest is Aphis gossypii, the colonies of which are localized on the underside of leaves, flowers, and growing points. Direct damage consists of sucking phloem sap, which leads to the curling of leaf blades. Indirect damage includes the transmission of viral infections and the development of sooty molds, which impair photosynthesis due to the honeydew coating.

A key tool for resistance breeding is the Vat gene, which provides protection against both aphid colonization and the transmission of non-persistent viruses. The gene belongs to the NLR type and, upon recognition of the pest, induces the deposition of callose and lignin in cell walls, hindering the insect's feeding. The effectiveness of Vat-mediated protection varies depending on the genetic diversity of aphid clones capable of adaptation.
