Peach aphid

Peach trees are affected by a complex of aphid species, including the green peach aphid (Myzodes persicae) and the large peach aphid (Pterochloroides persicae). The pests cause leaf deformation, flower drop, and reduced cold hardiness of the trees through the depletion of trunks and branches.

The most common species is the green peach aphid, for which the peach serves as the primary host. The mealy plum aphid, the striped aphid, the black peach aphid, and Myzus varians are also found on the crop. Infestation manifests as curling and wrinkling of the terminal leaves, as well as the withering of flowers during mass colonization.

As a result of aphid activity, a black sooty mold develops on the sugary secretions of the insects on the leaves, which reduces photosynthesis. The large peach aphid often concentrates on the bark of trunks and scaffold branches, leading to general tree decline. Furthermore, Myzodes persicae acts as a vector for a number of viral diseases in fruit crops.

Currently, no specific genes for aphid resistance have been identified in peach breeding, and genetically resistant cultivars are not used in practice. Existing aphid populations are polymorphic, however, their classification into pathotypes in the context of interaction with specific peach cultivars has not been developed in detail.
