Marketability of Summer Squash

A complex indicator of the suitability of a summer squash harvest for sale, representing the proportion of 8–12-day-old ovaries that meet quality standards in the total harvest volume.

Marketability is determined by sorting fruits after each harvest. Non-marketable produce (culls) includes fruits with mechanical damage, shape defects, missing peduncles, signs of rot, as well as overmature specimens with developed seeds and toughened, yellowed skin. The final indicator is expressed as a percentage of the marketable mass of the total or as the absolute weight of marketable fruits per unit area.

High marketability is characteristic of varieties with uniform fruit shape, resistance to damage during harvesting, and the ability to maintain technical maturity for a long time. Since the crop has continuous fruit production, maintaining this indicator requires regular harvesting every 7–12 days. In breeding evaluation, the marketability of varieties is determined by comparing them with control samples under similar agrotechnical conditions.
