Variety traits
Cucumis sativus L.
An indicator of the proportion of cucumber fruits meeting quality standards for sale or processing, expressed as a percentage of the total harvest mass. It is a key criterion in breeding selection and the assessment of production economic efficiency.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Cucumber, where this is mentioned in the description.
To assess cucumber marketability, samples are taken from different parts of a batch, after which the fruits are sorted into marketable and non-marketable. The latter category includes produce with mechanical damage, signs of disease, or deformed shapes that do not meet the requirements of national and international standards.
The calculation is performed as the ratio of the mass of the marketable fraction to the total mass of the sample. In breeding and variety testing of modern intensive hybrids, high marketability rates are 96–97%. A decrease in these values indicates the negative impact of agrotechnical errors, weather conditions, or diseases.
High marketability directly determines the profitability of cucumber cultivation, as production costs are distributed over a larger volume of marketable produce. Furthermore, the indicator depends on harvest timing; for instance, fruit overripeness leads to a decrease in the marketability of cucumbers, while requirements for the marketability of gherkins include strict standards for size and morphology.
