Watermelon transportability

Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai

The ability of watermelon fruits to maintain their marketability and integrity during transportation, determined by rind thickness, flesh density, and pectin content.

In the reference 75 varieties crop Watermelon, where this is mentioned in the description.

Watermelon transportability is assessed by experts by comparing the percentage of losses during long-distance shipping with the performance of standard varieties. A high level of the trait is considered to be the ability to maintain market quality for up to 45 days with a loss rate of less than 2%, whereas for varieties with thin rinds and tender flesh, this figure can reach 10%.

The indicator is significantly influenced by the morphological characteristics of the fruit: varieties with thick rinds and a dense flesh structure have better storage stability. Agronomic factors, such as excessive nitrogen nutrition, which leads to the formation of watery tissues, as well as errors in harvest timing and violations of post-harvest handling, significantly reduce the ability of the fruits to withstand transportation.
