Transportability of Raspberries and Blackberries

Rubus L.

The ability of berries to maintain their marketability and structure during harvesting and transport, quantitatively determined by the crushing force in Newtons using fruit testers.

In the reference 11 varieties crop Blackberry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The transportability of raspberries and blackberries directly depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the fruits, determined with the use of penetrometers. The level of suitability for transport and mechanical harvesting is evaluated through the force required to deform or disrupt the berry structure, expressed in Newtons.

In breeding evaluation, varieties with high transportability exhibit a crushing force in the range of 7.0 to 9.7 N. Values below 5.0 N are considered critically low, precluding the use of mechanical harvesting and long-distance logistics due to high risks of loss in quality and marketability.

This indicator is subject to fluctuations under the influence of meteorological conditions during the ripening period, particularly soil and air humidity. Even varieties genetically predisposed to high density may lose their transportable properties in unfavorable years.
