The complexity of winter protection for blackberries is due to shoot morphology. Trailing types (dewberries) are easily bent to the soil, whereas erect and semi-erect types (blackberries) possess rigid shoots, which complicates the traditional protection method without damaging the skeletal branches.

For protecting erect types, the application of non-woven materials directly on the trellis is effective, raising the temperature in the bud zone by 4–5 °C without bending. Timeliness of removing the cover in spring is a critical factor for preventing bud damping-off, with the protection's effectiveness depending on the hydrothermal conditions of the dormancy period.
