Variety traits
Rubus L.
A complex indicator of the ability of Rubus species cultivars to maintain the viability of buds and shoot tissues when exposed to low temperatures, which determines the cultivation area and the need for winter protection.
In the reference 15 varieties crop Blackberry, where this is mentioned in the description.
The winter hardiness of raspberries and blackberries is evaluated primarily on a 5-point scale based on the visual assessment of damage to the bark, cambium, and pith of shoots, as well as the viability of generative buds after overwintering. For a more detailed analysis, the method of artificial freezing of shoots collected in early November is used to simulate early winter and recurring frosts.
Cultivars with high winter hardiness are capable of withstanding temperatures down to -30...-35 °C without critical yield losses, whereas cultivars with low indicators require shoot bending and covering. Blackberries are generally inferior to raspberries in this trait, although erect blackberry forms are often characterized by greater frost resistance than trailing forms.
