Yield of Walnut

During walnut cultivar testing, the weight of nuts cleaned of the husk and dried is recorded, with an mandatory evaluation of the kernel percentage relative to the total fruit weight. At the individual tree level, yield figures vary from 20–40 kg for mature specimens to 100–200 kg under intensive cultivation practices.

Yield per hectare is determined by the planting scheme and the intensity of orchard management, reaching an average of approximately 3.5–5 tons per hectare in modern orchards, and up to 7–8 tons under experimental conditions. To maximize output, cultivars with a lateral bearing habit are preferred, as they possess the potential for regular and high harvests.

Maintaining productivity requires monitoring the annual stability of fruit bearing and performing formative pruning to prevent canopy shading. As the walnut is a light-demanding crop, adequate light distribution in intensive orchards is critical for realizing the potential yield.
