To assess walnut vigor, biometric indicators are used, such as tree height and trunk diameter at 20 years of age, as well as the length of annual shoots in the nursery. Varieties are classified as vigorous (>10–11 m), semi-vigorous (5–9 m), and low-vigor, the latter being most in demand for intensive orchards.
This trait directly influences cultivation technology: vigorous forms require wider spacing to ensure proper light exposure. Excessive vigor often negatively impacts yield and cold hardiness due to delayed shoot lignification; therefore, moderate growth is preferred for mechanized harvesting.
