Eggplant yield

Eggplant yield is an indicator of the productivity of a variety or hybrid, measured by the mass of marketable fruits at technical maturity, harvested multiple times throughout the growing season.

During variety trials, eggplant yield is recorded by selectively harvesting fruits at 5–7 day intervals until the onset of frost. The main quantitative indicators of productivity are the total mass of marketable fruits per plot, the average weight of a single fruit, and the number of fruits per plant.

Under open field conditions, the average yield is about 170 c/ha, although intensive technologies allow for 400–700 c/ha. In greenhouse conditions, the figures are significantly higher: from 25–40 kg/m² without supplementary lighting to 50–70 kg/m² when using light culture; industrial production profitability often starts at 55 kg/m².

The final crop productivity strongly depends on the agrotechnical approach to bush formation, planting density, and the stability of the temperature regime, as temperatures dropping below 15°C trigger flower/fruit drop. The use of F1 hybrids and grafting onto rootstocks allows for a significant increase in the stability and total volume of fruit production.
