For Welsh onion, the vegetation period is measured in days from the moment of emergence to the onset of marketability, which is determined by reaching a commercial leaf length, typically at least 30 cm. During breeding and variety trials, the phases of spring leaf regrowth, the onset of technical maturity, and the start of bolting are recorded.

Early-maturing varieties of the crop are characterized by a period from emergence to technical maturity of 35–45 days. An important breeding criterion is late bolting, which extends the period of greens availability, as well as the capacity for biomass regrowth after each cutting throughout the season.
