Variety traits
Allium fistulosum L.
The waxy bloom of the Welsh onion is an important morphological varietal trait, which is visually assessed on an intensity scale and affects plant stress tolerance, pest resistance, and the marketability of the greens.
In the reference 12 varieties crop Welsh onion, where this is mentioned in the description.
In Welsh onion variety trials, the degree of waxy bloom is determined visually and classified by gradation: weak, medium, or strong. Representatives of the 'Russian' subspecies (var. rossicum) and a number of foreign varieties (Japanese and Dutch) often exhibit a strong waxy bloom, whereas many domestic varieties, for example 'Ranniy' or 'Aprelskiy', are characterized by a weak degree of it.
The presence of an intense bloom gives the leaves a glaucous or bluish-green tint and serves a protective function. It facilitates moisture retention, increases resistance to fungal infections, and reduces the risk of pest damage, particularly from thrips. The intensity of the bloom in Welsh onion is generally less pronounced than in bulb onion and is a key indicator of varietal identity and plant adaptability.
