Vegetation period of squash

Cucurbita pepo L.

This is the period from full emergence to the onset of technical maturity of the fruits, measured in calendar days. This indicator serves as the main criterion for classifying varieties by earliness and planning the production conveyor.

In the reference 92 varieties crop Field pumpkin, where this is mentioned in the description.

For squash, the vegetation period is defined as the time until the fruits reach the stage of technical maturity suitable for consumption or processing. Early-maturing varieties ripen within 50 days, including ultra-early forms from 28 to 36 days; mid-early varieties reach maturity in 51–60 days, and mid-season varieties in over 60 days. There are late-maturing forms with a development cycle of up to 200 days, however, their significance for mass commercial production is limited.

Knowledge of the vegetation period is critical for managing agricultural practices, including the choice of cultivation method and harvest frequency. The transplanting method is used to reduce the time the crop spends in the field, and the intensity of nutrient application is adjusted based on the rate of yield formation. Since exceeding the stage of technical maturity leads to coarsening of the fruits and a decrease in fruit-set rates, precise knowledge of the period duration allows for forecasting the harvest schedule, which during active vegetation is 2–3 times per week.
