Vegetation period of eggplant

The duration of the period from mass emergence to the technical maturity of the fruits, which determines the suitability of a variety for a region and the cultivation technology.

For eggplant, the vegetation period is counted from the appearance of mass emergence to the onset of technical maturity, when the fruits attain the size and color characteristic of the variety, but the seeds are not yet fully developed. Depending on this duration, varieties are divided into early-ripening (85–105 days), mid-ripening (101–130 days), and late-ripening (130–150 days).

A long vegetation period necessitates the use of a seedling method of cultivation in most regions, except for southern ones. For zones with a short summer, it is critically important to use early-ripening varieties, as late-ripening types do not have enough time to form a marketable yield before the onset of unfavorable temperatures.
