Bean mosaic viruses

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

A group of viral diseases of beans caused by bean common mosaic (BCMV, BCMNV) and bean yellow mosaic (BYMV) viruses, characterized by leaf deformation, mosaic coloration, and plant stunting.

In the reference 575 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agents of these diseases belong to the genus Potyvirus. Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) are seed-transmitted and cause both typical chlorotic mosaic spots and systemic necrosis ("black root"). Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) manifests as a bright yellow-green pattern on leaves; however, unlike BCMV, it is not transmitted through bean seeds.

Resistance to BCMV is provided by a combination of the dominant gene I and a group of recessive genes, such as bc-u, bc-1, bc-2, and bc-3. The bc-3 gene, which encodes the translation initiation factor eIF4E, is a key component of modern breeding programs. A set of differential cultivars is used to assess virus pathogenicity, allowing for the classification of strains into pathogenicity groups.
