Tomato Mosaic Virus

A viral disease of tomato caused by Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), characterized by mosaic coloration, leaf and fruit deformation, and stunted plant growth.

The causal agent of the disease is the RNA-containing virus ToMV of the Virgaviridae family, which is distinguished by high stability in the environment and the ability to be transmitted mechanically via tools, hands, and infected seeds. Symptoms vary depending on conditions and the strain, manifesting as an alternation of light and dark-toned areas on leaves, or as leaf filiformity or curling. On fruits, the infection causes deformation, uneven ripening, and internal necrosis of the walls, known as brown wall.

In tomato breeding, resistance genes Tm-1, Tm-2, and Tm-2² are used, providing protection at the cellular or tissue level. In modern variety documentation, resistance to the pathogen is classified by races 0, 1, and 2, with the level of resistance indicated by HR or IR codes. In cases of mixed infections with other viruses, the disease can manifest as streak necrosis of stems and petioles, leading to plant death.
