Viral mosaics of durum wheat

Triticum durum Desf.

A group of viral diseases of durum wheat manifested by chlorotic mosaic, streaking, and plant stunting. Durum wheat shows increased susceptibility to these pathogens compared to common wheat.

Major diseases include soil-borne mosaic caused by SBCMV and SBWMV viruses, wheat streak mosaic (WSMV), and wheat spindle streak mosaic (WSSMV). Soil-borne viruses are transmitted by the protist Polymyxa graminis, while the wheat streak mosaic virus is spread by the wheat curl mite Aceria tosichella. Symptoms often appear in early spring and are exacerbated by mixed infections, leading to a significant reduction in yield.

Genetic resistance to WSMV is associated with the Wsm1, Wsm2, and Wsm3 loci; however, their integration into the durum wheat genotype is hindered by the phenomenon of linkage drag of undesirable traits from wild relatives. Regarding soil-borne viruses, breeding efforts focus on mapping resistance loci on chromosomes 2B and 5D, as most modern durum wheat cultivars remain highly susceptible to viral infections.
