Waxy bloom — onion

Allium cepa L.

The waxy bloom in onions is an important varietal morphological trait that serves a protective function and prevents damage to plants by onion thrips.

The intensity of the waxy bloom on onion leaves is evaluated visually using a scale that includes weak, medium, and strong degrees of expression. In breeding and variety testing, phenotypes are classified as waxy, semi-glossy, and glossy, with the latter characterized by a sharp reduction or absence of the wax layer.

The presence of a bloom regulates transpiration and increases the resistance of onions to abiotic stresses. Its density directly correlates with protection against onion thrips, as the wax structure makes it difficult for insects to attach to the leaf surface. At the same time, the intensity of wax formation is a hereditary trait, the development of which is influenced by light intensity, temperature, and air humidity.
