Cotton seed germination is the ability of planting material to produce normally developed seedlings, defined by GOST 21820.1-76 as the percentage of seeds with a radicle at least the length of the seed itself.

To determine cotton germination in a laboratory, 100-seed samples are used, which are germinated in thermostats at a controlled temperature of up to 40 °C. Seeds that have developed a fully functional radicle are classified as normally germinated, while abnormal or damaged seedlings are recorded separately.

Seed material with a germination rate of at least 95% is considered high-quality for industrial cultivation; using seeds with rates below 80% significantly increases the risk of sparse stands. Low germination leads to reduced yields and hinders the implementation of intensive precision sowing technologies.

Germination rates are critically influenced by the quality of delinting and the absence of mechanical damage to the seed coat, which prevents rotting in the soil. High germination rates and germination energy ensure the resilience of young plants to early-stage stress factors such as salinity and low temperatures.
