Under laboratory conditions, tomato seed germination is determined on the 10th day, and germination energy on the 6th day. A range of 85–95% is considered normal for laboratory germination. Values below 80% require adjustments to seeding rates to achieve the desired plant stand density.

Soil temperature has a critical impact on the field emergence and germination energy of tomatoes. The optimal temperature range is +22...+25°C, whereas when the temperature drops below +18°C, germination energy decreases sharply, which creates risks for the uniformity of seedling emergence and plant development.
