Coleus plant height

Plectranthus scutellarioides (L.) R. Br.

In professional breeding and DUS testing, height is measured in centimeters or meters. Modern coleus varieties are divided into three groups: dwarf (up to 20–25 cm), medium (30–50 cm), and tall (60–80 cm or more). When evaluating this trait, it is taken into account that generative shoots are often removed, as their development diverts resources from the vegetative part of the plant.

The final habit is significantly influenced by environmental conditions: lack of light triggers excessive shoot elongation. To manage the form, agrotechnical practices such as pinching the apical bud at an early age are used, which stimulates branching and allows for the adjustment of the genetically determined plant height.
