Coleus Propagation by Cuttings

Plectranthus scutellarioides (L.) R. Br.

Propagation via apical shoot cuttings is the primary method for coleus, ensuring complete retention of varietal characteristics and high root system regeneration rates.

In the reference 3 varieties crop Coleus, where this is mentioned in the description.

Only apical shoots are used for coleus propagation, as leaf cuttings do not ensure full plant development. The process is characterized by high plasticity: roots form within 1–2 weeks in water, perlite, vermiculite, peat, or sand at a temperature of +18...+20°C. When rooting in water, stems are prone to bending, so the use of substrates or additives like perlite is recommended to maintain their shape.

Unlike many ornamental crops, coleus does not require greenhouse conditions with high humidity or bottom heat. Propagation is often combined with planned rejuvenation of the bush, as mature plants quickly lose their ornamental appeal and become leggy. When harvesting winter planting material, one should avoid using old stock plants from open ground due to the risk of pathogen accumulation on the root system.
