Dahlia plant height

Dahlia Cav.

Dahlia height is an important varietal trait, varying from 30 cm in dwarf forms to 2.5 m in giant cultivars. This parameter determines planting scheme requirements, the necessity for staking, and landscaping application.

According to international variety testing methods, dahlia height is measured from the soil level to the top of the plant or the point of flower head attachment during the active flowering phase. Based on height, varieties are categorized into dwarf and bedding types (up to 60 cm), intended for containers and the foreground, as well as medium and tall types (exceeding 80–100 cm).

This trait directly influences agricultural practices: varieties 80–100 cm or taller require mandatory staking due to the fragility of their hollow stems. Planting density also depends on plant height: for low-growing varieties, the spacing is reduced to 20–30 cm, whereas tall varieties require a larger feeding area with intervals of up to 50–80 cm.
