Variety traits

Tomato plant height

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato plant height is a morphological trait that determines the growth type and variety classification. It is measured as the distance from the soil surface to the growing point of the main stem.

In the reference 426 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The classification of tomatoes by height is inextricably linked to their determinacy. Super-determinate varieties reach 30–60 cm and cease growth after the 3rd cluster, determinate varieties (60–130 cm) after 4–5 clusters, semi-determinate varieties range from 150–200 cm, and indeterminate varieties exceed 200 cm.

This trait determines cultivation technology: tall varieties require mandatory trellising, pruning, and a sparse planting scheme (60–70 cm between plants). Short-stature forms are better suited for cultivation with minimal staking, and are characterized by uniform ripening and dense planting.
