Sweet corn height is measured from the soil surface to the point of tassel attachment during the silking, ear flowering, or milk stage. The values for this trait vary from 0.6 m in ultra-early maturing forms to 3.5 m or more in mid-late and late-maturing hybrids.
The trait determines cultivation technology: tall forms require larger growing areas to prevent shading and are more demanding regarding stalk strength due to the risk of lodging. Plant height is plastic and depends directly on soil fertility and the availability of nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus.
