Buddleja davidii is a thermophilic shrub whose aerial part in temperate climates often freezes back to the root collar. The plant possesses a high regenerative capacity, allowing it to sprout new shoots in spring on which inflorescences are formed.

In temperate climate conditions, the shrub is sensitive to low temperatures, which often causes the aerial part of the shoots to freeze. Despite this, the plant maintains the viability of the root system, which ensures rapid regrowth of shoots in the spring period and allows the crop to bloom in the current season.
Spring return frosts can damage young shoots; however, the plant is capable of withstanding short-term temperature drops down to -8°C. To protect dormant buds at the base of the bush, agricultural practices include autumn pruning of shoots to a height of 20–35 cm and mandatory mulching of the root zone.
