When cultivating gerbera in a protected environment, a key factor is the creation of a highly aerated medium with mandatory substrate sterilization, as the plant is critically susceptible to Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Pythium. A technologically important aspect is shallow planting of the rosettes: burying the root collar is unacceptable, as it leads to immediate plant decay.
Mineral nutrition of the crop is carried out exclusively by fertigation with precise adjustment of the N:P:K ratio depending on the developmental stages and monitoring of micronutrient content, especially iron. To prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, irrigation is performed in the morning hours, avoiding moisture condensation on leaves at night.
Optimal conditions include a daytime temperature of 18–24°C and a nighttime temperature of 12–16°C with a photoperiod of 12–14 hours. In industrial-scale production, drip irrigation, misting systems, and supplementary lighting are used to ensure continuous output, allowing plants to be exploited for several years.
