Birdsfoot trefoil is characterized by high winter hardiness, provided by a robust root system. In the absence of snow cover, the critical temperature for the crop is -25°C.

The winter hardiness of the crop is ensured by a robust taproot system and the presence of overwintering shoots with buds located on the root collar at a depth of 1.5–2 cm. The plant is capable of withstanding low temperatures; however, in the absence of snow cover, the risk of winterkill increases when temperatures reach approximately -25°C.

Winter survival rates are negatively affected by delaying the final autumn mowing and using cover crops during the year of sowing, which leads to a weakening of the stand. Conversely, the application of potash fertilizers and timely mowing of the stands increase plant adaptability, contributing to their long-term persistence in fields for up to 10–12 years.
