The evaluation of winter hardiness in Phlox paniculata is conducted in the spring during the period of full shoot regrowth. The primary criteria are the percentage of surviving plants and the presence of delays in their vegetation relative to control samples. The use of a 5-point scale allows for the ranking of cultivars by degree of adaptability: the highest score is assigned when 95–100% of specimens survive, whereas a score of 2 indicates the death of more than half of the plants and their subsequent weak regrowth.

High winter hardiness indicators are due to the genetic resistance of Phlox cells to dehydration and intracellular water crystallization processes. For breeding and industrial introduction, the most promising cultivars are those with a score of 5, which do not require winter coverings, significantly reducing labor costs in crop cultivation. This trait is a priority when selecting an assortment for regions with severe climates, such as Western Siberia.
