The variety Dong Hong (Oriental Red) was obtained through the selection of seedlings from open pollination of the Hongyang variety. The fruits have an elliptical shape and pubescent skin; their main distinguishing feature is the bright red color of the flesh in the locule area.

The variety is characterized by an early or early-mid maturity group. The taste qualities of the fruits are distinguished by high sweetness, with sugar content reaching 20–21° Brix. The plant is characterized by excellent keeping quality of the fruits during storage.
