The variety forms bulbs that exceed common shallots in size and have an intense oat-straw color. In 19th-century literature, the variety was classified as early-maturing, and its ability for long-term storage was also noted.
The botanical status of the variety has historically been a subject of debate: due to its ability to form seeds, it was associated with forms of onion or potato onion, and not only with Allium ascalonicum. In historical literature, the variety was also found under the name 'Russian shallot'.
