The open-pollinated variety has round or round-cuboid bulbs with thin necks and firm outer scales of light brown or straw-yellow color. The plant forms erect grey-green leaves with good foliage.

Due to the firm structure of the bulbs, Balstora is often used in scientific research as a reference variety for studying mechanical damage during harvesting and storage.
